Crochet is making a comeback! It can be a very enjoyable and relaxing hobby…. You also get something useful and practical when finished such as a hat or a blanket.
The Basics: Things you need to know before learning to crochet.
There are some basic crochet stitches that can take you a very long way. Once you learn these stitches, you can make practically anything.
These are the basic stitches:
CH = Chain Stitch
SS = Slip Stitch (or Sl St)
SC = Single Crochet
HDC = Half Double Crochet
DC = Double Crochet
TR or TC = Triple or Treble Crochet
*You will need some crochet hooks and yarn to get started. I prefer [[[Clover Crochet Hooks]]] and I bought my set on Amazon.
I find that the best way to learn this skill is by example. I filmed these videos for beginners.
First for the chain stitch (CH) – This video is provided by me, Michele @ Poochie Baby.
Our first row is single crochet (SC) – This video is provided by me, Michele @ Poochie Baby.
Next comes the half double crochet (HDC) – This video is provided by me, Michele @ Poochie Baby.
Now learn the double crochet (DC)… This is my MOST used stitch! – This video is provided by me, Michele @ Poochie Baby.
The last of the basic stitches is the triple or treble crochet (TC or TR) – This video is provided by me, Michele @ Poochie Baby.
I almost forgot…. You need to know how to slip stitch (SS or Sl St). All work ends with a slip stitch and is then tied off. This video is provided by Yarn Obsession.
So, these are the basic crochet stitches. Be sure to bookmark this page so you can come back again while learning! When you master these basic stitches, browse through my patterns for sale. There are many that are quick and easy! I write my patterns in “plain english”!! When just starting out, please do not pick up crochet books and try to read those patterns……. it will only scare you! It looks like some kind of creepy foreign language. My patterns are NOT scary.
There are additional videos of easy and more advanced stitches and techniques on the Poochie Baby Crochet You Tube channel.
Happy Hooking Folks!
