Why I Love My Bullet Journal
My bullet journal is special. It is the organized chaos of my life. No matter what type of planner I may currently be using, I always try to incorporate some type of “bullet journaling” in there.
If you have seen any of my recent planner videos, you will know that I have been using a traveler’s notebook and my phone for my planning needs. I purchased a new Hobonichi Weeks that fits nicely into a cover that I made to fit. The Weeks has everything I need in a planner except enough note pages to keep a proper bullet journal. To “fix” this, I added a separate insert to house all of my other notes.
I have been looking forward to using this setup even though I don’t plan to use the Hobonichi as a planner. I plan to use it as a “record keeper”. Unfortunately, this has left me also feeling a little lost. I can plan and think much better when I have all of my information in one place.
On a recent trip to Target, I found a Moleskine journal on clearance. I just couldn’t resist buying it. It has a lovely design and a canvas feel to the cover. It is not squared or grid, which is what I usually use for a bullet journal, but that’s okay. After much internal debate, I decided to go ahead and set it up over the weekend.
So, what planners am I actively using right now?
- The Moleskine journal – This is my bullet journal with all of my daily notes, monthly calendar, weekly time tracking spread, lists of things to do, etc. Anything and everything can go into this book and then be copied into a more appropriate place later if needed.
- My phone, LG V20 – My phone currently keeps all appointments and tasks, long term task lists and everything that I keep stored in Evernote. My phone is always with me…… always. All important information from my other planners, bullet journal etc, gets scanned with my phone and added to Evernote.
- My Hobonichi weeks – This planner does not start until the very end of November so I haven’t started to use it properly yet. This planner is my record keeper for 2017. Things that I want to have tracked and recorded for 2017 will be in this one little book. It can stay at home and be updated as needed.
- PlanAhead Daily Planner – I recently picked up this 2017 daily planner that had some bonus months. Which meant I could start using it right away. It is the “See it Bigger” version. I considered trying to use this as a bullet journal but I have found that dated daily pages never work for me this way. I like a blank layout that allows me to do whatever I need on each page. So, I am using this as a traditional type of journal or just writing in an overview of the day. I haven’t been using it consistently but that’s okay. I don’t plan to stress about this.
When I leave the house, I always have my phone with me but I also throw my bullet journal in my bag. I never know what ideas may pop into my head while I’m out. I need somewhere to write them down. I may also have grocery lists or other information in there that I need to access while out. If for some reason I forget to bring the book with me, most of the information is also in my phone. I just have to remember to routinely add information to Evernote.
All of this may seem really complicated but it’s not. I could probably forgo paper all together and just use my phone. But, my brain just works and thinks better when I actually write things out on paper. I like having a physical book to hold in my hands and leaf through. In a way, it evolves into a journal of my life, showing the things I was doing and what was important to me at that time. My bullet journals always end up with photos and other memorabilia which make them more interesting.
I love my bullet journal because it is a reflection of me.
